New School Year, New Leaders, New Ideas: Silver Creek’s Student Senate is Back and Ready to Make Changes
As the fall semester is getting started, a new voice echoes through the hallway during the morning announcements. The Silver Creek student body is being led by a new team who is ready and excited to make change.
After a tight election last spring, Silver Creek seniors Brooklynn Baum and Om Singh became the newest leaders of the student body. Baum, the President, has been active in the Longmont City Youth Council since her sophomore year and has been doing school student council since middle school. Singh, the Vice President, has been involved in the Silver Creek Student Senate for the past two years. This qualified duo has tons of great ideas and is quickly getting to work.
Though there are many parts of Student Senate, the Student Body President has a particularly unique role. This student is in charge of events that impact the entire school; specifically working on events like spirit weeks, homecoming, and pep rallies. Also, the Student Body President is in charge of leading Student Senate meetings. The Vice President also has many responsibilities.
“I help the president, I make google forms, send emails to people and I help coordinate the meetings,” Singh says.
Together this team divides and conquers. “Om is like my right-hand man,” Brooklynn Baum said. “He fills in for me when I’m gone and takes on any responsibilities that I don’t have time for,”
Communication and teamwork is a key factor for working well together. “We communicate well about our senate work and share our goals pretty openly,” Singh said.
In addition to the leaders of the student body, the senior class presidents have been hard at work with their new ideas for the senior class. In previous years, the senior class was led by one person, but two girls are sharing the role this year. Katelyn Jonhnston and Eden Rutledge are this year’s senior class co-president and they are enjoying the job.
“I love sharing [the job] because we both feel like we have equal responsibility which makes us feel empowered to work hard,” Eden Rutledge says.
The senior class presidents are in charge of working on senior-specific projects, like organizing senior sunrise and making an end-of-the-year senior slideshow.
“Being [senior] class president allows me to make this year the best for the seniors and I’m super excited to be able to do it!” Says Katelyn Johnston.
Together, the team has so many great ideas and lots they are looking forward to. The team talked about the anticipated homecoming events and created a stronger presence on Silver Creek’s Instagram page.
“We are pushing our school’s social media to the forefront and are introducing virtual announcements on the Senate Instagram,” Baum added.
Student Senate is known for having an open-door policy and is always welcoming new members. Joining Student Senate is a great way to get involved and make positive change at Silver Creek.
“Get involved as soon as possible!” Katelyn Johnston says. “We meet a lot, and by getting involved you not only open pathways for a leadership position but you learn a lot of valuable skills.”
In addition, Steve McNichols, the teacher sponsor of Student Senate says: “The more people we can get involved the better. The more you participate, the more enjoyable it is.”
As the school year continues to unfold, the student body will get to see all of Student Senates’ hard work pay off and see all that they have in store for this year.
“There are other secrets and surprises that we have for later in the year and we can’t wait for you guys to see them,” says Baum. “I’m also really excited to do my very best to leave a positive impact on Senate and on Creek as a whole.”
Leading the student body and creating a positive and fresh environment is no easy task, but this dedicated group of leaders is ready to bring Student Senate and Silver Creek to the next level.
For those wanting to get involved, Student Senate meets every Wednesday morning at 7:10 in Mr. McNichols’ classroom, D100. More information can be found on the Student Senate instagram page, @schs.senate.
