The expansion of journalism in schools, especially at Silver Creek High School, has been notable in recent years. The journalism class has been offered for a long time at Silver Creek and recently has become a much more popular class. Class sizes have been increasing, demonstrating the students’ growing interest in the subject.
“It’s definitely gotten bigger, and there’s more people in the class and more people are interested in journalism, it’s become a fun environment,” Anna Goodbee, Silver Creek senior and staff editor said.
An editor’s job is to help the other kids in the class and give them feedback on their writing since they have already taken the class. As the number of students in the class grows, and as more people are enjoying themselves, it makes for a more fun experience for everyone.
With the increased number of students who want to take the journalism class, it helps grow a bigger community of journalists. On top of that, it creates a fun class and environment for all.
Since there has been this increased interest in journalism, more kids have been able to learn about how to write articles and have had the opportunity to do so.
“I took this class because I thought it would be fun and I enjoy writing,” Silver Creek senior Daphne Fischaber said. “I enjoy the writing aspect of the class and I think it’s really cool that we actually write for the school newspaper,” she said.
One aspect of this class that really interests a lot of students is that you are able to have your work published in the school newspaper, “The Talon Tribune” which can be found online and seen by anyone. It provides students with an opportunity to have their voice heard when otherwise they might not be able to.
Another big factor that contributes to the growth in the class is the wide variety and depth of information that students are able to learn.
“Enthusiasm about the class has increased, and more students are choosing to take the class because they enjoy it, and students are interested in becoming editors,” Kaelyn Vargo, the journalism teacher said.
Students who are interested in becoming editors can directly show how much they liked the class because, that means that they want to spend another semester— or more— in the class. It means they want to help others and show them why they enjoy journalism.
It is also a promising sign that more kids are actively making the choice to take the class because there are many different classes you can take and you have many different options. The increase of journalism at Silver Creek High School is allowing more Raptor voices to be heard.
