Many classes in school can feel like busy work with no real value, so finding a class that can teach you real-life skills can be very helpful. Journalism has always been one of those classes that can be very applicable to other areas in your life and can teach students beneficial skills.
“Journalism teaches students how to write concisely, without bias, and how to integrate interviews and quotes into articles,” Kaelyn Vargo, Silver Creek High School journalism teacher says.
It is crucial that students learn how to write well and learn the details about writing. In English class students learn a lot about writing, but not necessarily how to write without bias or how to conduct interviews. Learning how to conduct interviews can be a very important skill because it teaches communication and how to report correctly.
Learning to exclude bias is another skill taught in journalism. It is important because when writing it is important to correctly report things and everything is true.
“Learning how to work with a deadline is important because you learn better time management and how to work efficiently,” Izzy Spagnoletti, Silver Creek High School senior said.
One of the major components of journalism is working with deadlines. It is important that everyone gets their work done on time and writes their articles in a timely manner so that it is still newsworthy. In journalism, students learn skills that help them manage their time better and they learn the importance of working efficiently and managing their time so that they get everything done one time.
“Journalism taught me how important it is to manage my time well in order to make a deadline,” Willa Lover, a previous journalism student says.
If it isn’t a recent event that you are writing about, people will not be as interested in your article and the subject. Making deadlines can also be an important skill in other parts of your life. For example, if someone wants you to do something by a certain time and you don’t then that isn’t going to be a good thing.
Overall it is very important that studentskids take journalism so that they can develop much needed skills that will help them throughout their life in lots of different areas. Through journalism class you are able to learn important skills such as communication, working with deadlines, and writing concisely, which can all lead to success.
