When winter seems dull and bitter, the warmth of a holiday film can provide solace for all people, young and old. An obvious choice for holiday films is The Walt Disney Company, who often releases holiday specialty features and short films.
On November 15th, a new short film was released on Disney+. This short film is titled An Almost Christmas Story, Written by Alfonso Cuarón and Jack Thorne and directed by David Lowery, who also directed Disney’s live-action version of Pete’s Dragon.
Along with the skillful managers of this film, the voice cast includes talented actors and TV personalities including Jim Gaffigan, Mamoudou Athie (Pixar’s Elemental), Phil Rosenthal (Somebody Feed Phil), and many others.
This film follows Moon, an owlette living in an ordinary forest, not far from New York City. After landing in a grand Christmas tree, he finds himself on a magnificent and challenging journey to the big city.
Fast forward to Moon’s arrival to the Big Apple, where on the streets, hustle and bustle all around, he finds a kind little girl. Moon and his new friend set out on a holiday adventure, racing through the streets, guided by moonlight and Christmas lights hung above.
Another element contributing to the whimsy of this film is the unique and innovative animation.
Inspired by miniature cities, CG cardboard was used to create a homemade yet magical feel. All of the elements featured are items that can be found around the house, and then transformed into crafts or projects. Besides the hand-painted-looking characters and the illusions of cardboard buildings, all of the backdrops created seem to be hand-painted.
Throughout the short, the holidays are the spotlight. This film provides a nostalgic holiday feel, from the homemade sets to the folksy music.
When you need a feel-good motion picture in a short amount of time, look no further than An Almost Christmas Story for wistful and beautiful holiday feels.
