“A Minecraft Movie” is a 2025 adventure, action, and comedy movie based on the widely popular video game “Minecraft” by Mojang Studios. The movie was directed by Jared Hess, known for his films like “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Nacho Libre”.
Characters Garett (Jason Momoa), Natalie (Emma Myers), Henry (Sebastian Eugene Hansen), and Dawn (Danielle Brooks) find themselves struggling in the real world with mundane problems when they are pulled through a mysterious portal into Minecraft’s interpretation of the real world, the Overworld. A world made of blocks with endless possibilities. Here they eventually meet an eccentric man named Steve (Jack Black). To get back home, they’ll have to go through unexpected challenges to make it back to the real world.
It is unclear to the viewers who exactly the main character is between Steve, Garett
Garrison, and Henry. Viewers don’t know who the main character is but could make a good argument for every one of them. However, the starting “skin” in the video game is Steve which definitely makes him the main focus to the viewers, being the only main character that actually exists in minecraft.
The movie encapsulates the world of “Minecraft” very well with all the real props they used along with Computer-Generated Imagery. The real props the production team used helped the actors see what world they were actually in, and that made the overall movie better. For instance the production team had people in “villager” costumes just without the head so the actors knew who or what they were interacting with.
The plot of “A Minecraft Movie” is very predictable. There is no unexpected moment in the film. The plot could have been about fighting the Ender Dragon, the end boss in the video game itself, but it didn’t mention anything about the Ender Dragon.
The acting combination of Jack Black and Jason Momoa made the movie very comedic. Those two by themselves are funny, but together made the movie hilarious. It made the movie entertaining to watch because of the funny moments they had together
People who have seen “A Minecraft Movie” in theatres have been clapping or even screaming when moments from the trailer happen, like for example, when Steve says “Chicken Jockey”. The cheering and excitement could elevate your enjoyment of the film or it could make it worse. So if you want a better experience go to theaters because of the energy the theater produces.
There is one wholesome part in the movie, it is when a pig with a crown on walks into frame and hints at one of Minecraft’s beloved YouTubers, Technoblade, who died of cancer in 2022.
Overall, the movie as a whole is funny and mostly entertaining. If you have a chance to go watch it in theatres, it makes the movie experience so much better.
PG (Some Scary Images|Language|Suggestive/Rude Humor|Violence/Action). The movie running time is 1h 41m under the Kids & Family, Fantasy, Adventure, Comedy, Action genres
