Murder. Mystery. Crime. Suspense. These are all qualities that fans of the “High Potential” television show series think of when the show's title pops up on ABC networks.
After leaving watchers on a cliffhanger three-quarters of the way through season two, the show returned to streaming on March 6. “High Potential” Season 2 will have 18 episodes total when it airs the season finale, Family Tree, on April 7.
The show follows Morgan Gillory (Kaitlin Olson), throughout her life as a “consultant” for the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD). Morgan observes crime scenes and connects all the dots within a mystery. She is typically the one to solve the case first, even if it appears to be something the viewers never saw coming. Her role with the LAPD and high intelligence capabilities were established in Season 1.
Morgan is not only working on cases for the LAPD, but with the help of her partner, Detective Karadec (Daniel Sunjata) and her boss, Selena Soto (Judy Reyes), Morgan is searching for her first husband, Roman. He is perceived to have walked out on Morgan and their family 15 years ago, but this may not be the whole story.
By further incorporating this overarching plot line, Season 2 stays interesting and doesn't feel repetitive like typical murder mysteries. Each episode is relatively new and interesting, as well as Morgan’s character development.
Morgan carries herself with immense confidence and guts. At the end of Season 1, her character was beginning to get annoying due to her rash decisions. She can be rude and tends to do whatever she wants, and despite that often leading to a solved case, it can be frustrating for those working with her and those watching the show. Seeing the team struggle to work together due to her defiance can be painful.
However, Season 2 finally (and rightfully) put Morgan in her place. This pivotal turning point not only showed that Morgan’s rash actions have been recognized, but also that her team members are firmly behind her. Morgan’s high potential ability is also expanded upon; some scenes suggest that her immense intelligence is not always a gift.
Season 2 also introduced a new character, Nick Wagner (Steve Howey). Nick is the LAPD’s new captain, and by incorporating his new role, the show has gained further interest and tension which makes viewers more excited to watch it.
Not only is Nick’s character new, interesting, and causing conflicts, but it also raises further questions regarding Roman. Viewers are questioning what Nick’s motives are and how he will affect Morgan and her family.
Season 2 also answers some lingering questions about Morgan and Detective Karadec’s relationship, finally showing the entirety of Karadec’s previously eluded backstory.
Lucia (Susan Kelechi Watson), was mentioned in Season 1 as Karadec’s ex fiancée. Lucia and Karadec surprisingly reconnect in season two, despite romantic assumptions about Karadec and Morgan being “end-game.” This rekindled relationship has clearly dismayed some viewers who believe Karadec and Morgan belong together.
However, the new romantic complexity in Season 2 has also kept viewers further captivated. Viewers will continue to see how each relationship shifts as the season continues.
Luckily, Season 2 is not the end for fans of “High Potential”, as it has been renewed for a third season. Season 3 will hopefully continue to bring the excitement, interest, and suspense that season one and two delivered.
High Potential Season 2 is available on Hulu and airs every Tuesday on ABC.
