“If they’re a freshman right now … they can talk to their counselor about adding SCLA 9 as a first semester class and then SCLA 10 as a second semester class.“ Forbes said. Although this is not a common opportunity, it is an exception that can be made for specific students, typically a freshman going into their sophomore year.
Per semester of SCLA, students need to complete 24 hours of volunteering. Volunteer hours provide students with new experiences to develop skills that are valuable outside of school settings. Silver Creek Leadership Academy gives students opportunities to develop social and academic skills.
Although SCLA offers this wide range of opportunities for students, some challenges come with taking the program. The workload of SCLA seems to be a prominent challenge that students face while taking the program. The volunteering hours also take a toll on students and their busy schedules. Another minor downside to SCLA, students lose a spot in the limited number of electives given per semester.
Anupriya Anil Mylevahanan, a sophomore enrolled in SCLA, explains some of the challenges that SCLA students face.
“I feel sometimes the workload can be a little bit demanding,” Mylevahanan said, “especially when you’re working with events that are taking place outside of school, but if you learn how to manage your calendar, you can definitely handle it.”

![Hosting the SCLA Casptone Mentor Dinner outside allowed for more attendees on September 27, 2021 at Silver Creek. This event would’ve usually been held inside. According to Lauren Kohn, a SCLA 12 teacher, “If we have a higher number of people, as long as we can host the event outside, then that seems to be keeping every[one] safe”.](https://schsnews.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/sxMAIGbSYGodZkqmrvTi5YWcJ1ssWA08ApkeMLpp-900x675.jpeg)
