Starting in a new school can be very challenging but exciting at the same time. It’s different from what you’re used to; new faces, new teachers, and a new environment. Freshman year is a new start and a chance to learn and grow.
One of the biggest challenges is adjusting to a new environment. High school is often larger, with more students and teachers in the buildings.
Lauren Baker, a freshman at Silver Creek High School, had a drastic environmental change with not only coming in from middle school, but also moving from California to Colorado.
“It was really overwhelming, and it was definitely hard for me the first couple weeks, but I adjusted pretty well.”
Being able to adjust is something that you will need to be able to do because high school is a big change, and adjusting can be a great thing. Another hard challenge is trying to balance school work with sports, and having a life outside of school.
Evyr Sutherland, a freshman at Silver Creek High School, has had to learn how to manage her time with a full course load, participating in Silver Creek Leadership Academy, and sports.
“I put my academics first, so I always try to get my homework done before hanging out with any friends,” Sutherland said. “I use my time really wisely on the weekend if I need to catch up on anything.”
Social interactions are another key to a successful freshman year. Lots of students are eager to join clubs, sports, and are able to make new friends, meet new peers and teachers, and help make high school feel more comforting.
Susan Campie, a senior at Silver Creek, believes students should get involved with the school outside of classes to heighten their experience.
“I feel like I had good involvement in this school, which made it a lot better,” Campie said.“Get more involved.”
Getting involved and doing activities within the school can really be a game changer, especially when walking into a new community and environment. Going to things like football games and fun events that can really bring people joy and excitement.
Freshman year is not too early to start planning your future, setting goals and getting ready for your high school journey. But also having fun and enjoying yourself through these years is very important.
“Enjoy the easy classes and go to all the events, it gets harder the more years you’re at Creek.” Savoring the little things and taking your time to settle in is a good way to start off your next four years.
Justelle Grandsaert, Silver Creek High School social studies teacher, advises freshmen to not be too be their authentic selves.
“Give yourself grace, time and patience to figure yourself out, and don’t be swayed by what people think of you,” Grandsaert said.
Freshman year is all about making new friends, gaining more freedom, joining things to get involved, and having fun. Your freshman year sets the tone for the next 4 years, so always try your hardest.

![Hosting the SCLA Casptone Mentor Dinner outside allowed for more attendees on September 27, 2021 at Silver Creek. This event would’ve usually been held inside. According to Lauren Kohn, a SCLA 12 teacher, “If we have a higher number of people, as long as we can host the event outside, then that seems to be keeping every[one] safe”.](https://schsnews.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/11/sxMAIGbSYGodZkqmrvTi5YWcJ1ssWA08ApkeMLpp-900x675.jpeg)
